The Portuguese passport ranks sixth in the Henley Passport Index, published by Bloomberg.

The ranking compares the access of 199 passports to 227 destinationsin terms of whether or not a prior visa is required.

In Portugal's group are Sweden, France, the Netherlands and Ireland, whose passports allow visa-free entry to 188 destinations.

The list has Japan in first place with 193 destinations, followed by Singapore (192) and South Korea and Germany (191).

The Europeans Italy, Finland, Spain and Luxembourg, with 190 destinations, occupy fourth place and just ahead of Portugal comes Denmark and Austria, with 189.

Portugal is followed by Belgium, New Zealand, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the USA.

The last places are occupied by Syria (114th), with 29 destinations, Iraq (115th), with 28, and Afghanistan, with 26.

O Henley Passport Index is produced by the law firm Henley & Partners, which defines its activity as "residence and citizenship planning", based on information provided by the International Air Transport Association.

Henley & Partners CEO Juerg Steffen recalls that "the pandemic has eroded the strength of premium passports." All because of the various restrictions on international travel.

Juerg Steffen gives the example of Japan, whose passport is only admitted without prior visas to 80 destinations, and whose Saudi passport ranks 71st without the influence of the coronavirus.

The same goes for the French passport, which only has free entry to 82 destinations, on a par with the Papua New Guinea document.
