RESIDENCE VISAS IN PORTUGAL

Types of visa

If a foreign citizen wants to stay in Portugal for more than 90 days, they need to obtain a visa. Visas can be issued depending on the purpose of the stay:


 

  • Temporary stay visa: intended for stays of one year or less. This includes students who intend to live in Portugal for less than a year;

 

  • Residence visa: intended for stays of one year or more. This includes, for example, students who want to live in Portugal for more than a year, and pensioners who want to live in the country;

 

  • Schengen visas: enable nationals of third countries that require a visa (this is not the case with Brazil) to enter or transit through the countries that make up the Schengen Area. They are intended for short stays (up to 90 days).

 

Main situations for obtaining a residence visa in Portugal:



  • Visa for the exercise of subordinate professional activity (D1 Visa)

    Documents required

    • Employment contract or promise of employment contract;
    • Proof that you are qualified to practice the profession;
    • Individualized expression of interest by the employer.

    In addition to these documents, the person concerned must not be or have ever been illegal in the European Union, nor have a criminal record.

  • Visa for self-employed professionals or entrepreneurial migrants (D2 Visa)

    Independent activity


    • Have a company contract or offer to provide services in the liberal professions; and
    • To be qualified to exercise independent activity, where applicable, by means of a declaration issued by the competent authority, for example, the Portuguese Bar Association.

    Entrepreneurial immigrants:


    • Have made or declare that you intend to make an investment in Portugal; or
    • Proof of having financial means available in Portugal (including those resulting from financing with a financial institution in Portugal), and demonstrating the intention to carry out an investment operation in Portuguese territory.
  • Visa for research activity, doctoral study, higher education teaching activity, or highly qualified activity (D3 Visa)

    Scientific research:


    • Employment contract or hosting agreement with a research center or higher education institution; or 
    • Have been admitted to a research center or higher education institution, and hold a research grant or scholarship; or 
    • Present a term of responsibility signed by the research center or higher education institution guaranteeing their admission and living expenses; and
    • Have health insurance covering the duration of your stay.

    Teaching or highly qualified activity:

    • Employment contract or promise of employment contract or service contract; or
    • Invitation letter issued by an educational or vocational training institution; or
    • Statement of responsibility from a company certified under the terms defined by the competent government;
    • Invitation letter issued by a company or entity that carries out, in national territory, a cultural activity recognized by the competent government; or
    • Invitation letter issued by a research center.

    Highly qualified subordinate activity:

    • Employment contract valid for at least 6 months, corresponding to an annual remuneration of at least 1.5 times the national average gross annual salary or three times the social support index value (IAS), with the opinion of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.
  • Visas for study, exchange of secondary school students, unpaid professional internships and voluntary work (D4 visa)

    University student

    • Proof of enrollment or letter of acceptance from the university;
    • Proof of income to demonstrate your ability to support yourself in Portugal during your studies.

    I study at secondary school:

    • Document issued by an educational establishment stating that you have been admitted or meet the conditions for admission;
    • Proof of foster care or proof of accommodation.

    Unpaid internship:

    • Document issued by a company or recognized training body;
    • Internship program;
    • Training contract;
    • Timing of the internship.

    Volunteering

    • Document proving that you have been admitted to an officially recognized organization for a volunteer program in Portugal.
  • Visa for family reunification (D6 visa)

    • Proof of authorization for family reunification issued by AIMA;
    • For minors or incapacitated persons, travel authorization from the person exercising parental authority or guardianship.
  • Visa for pensioners or income earners (D7 Visa)

    Currently, the D7 visa can be applied for by:


    • Pensioners;
    • Owners of rental properties;
    • Investment holders;
    • Artists and people who are entitled to receive royalties or copyright.

    Documents and requirements for obtaining a D7 visa:


    • Application on the appropriate template;
    • Passport or other valid travel document;
    • Two identical, up-to-date photographs in good condition to identify the applicant;
    • Valid travel insurance to cover necessary medical expenses, including emergency care and possible repatriation;
    • Application for consultation of the Portuguese criminal record by AIMA;
    • Criminal record certificate from the country of origin or the country where the applicant has lived for more than one year;
    • Accommodation conditions;
    • Proof of the existence of means of subsistence as defined by order of the competent members of the Government.

  • Digital nomad visa (D8 visa)

    Documents and requirements:


    In situations of subordinate work (with an employment relationship), one of the following documents:


    • Employment contract; or
    • Statement from the employer proving the employment relationship.

    In the case of independent service provision, one of the following documents:


    • Articles of association; or
    • Service contract; or
    • Document demonstrating the provision of services to one or more entities;
    • Proof of average monthly income from subordinate or independent professional activity in the last three months of at least the equivalent of four Portuguese minimum monthly wages (€3,280);
    • Document certifying tax residence outside Portugal.
  • Startup Visa

    The so-called "Startup Visa" is linked to the Portuguese government's innovation policy and requires specific requirements to be met:

    • That intend to develop activities for the production of innovative goods and services with a view to internationalization; 
    • That their projects and/or companies focus on technology and knowledge, with the prospect of developing innovative products;
    • That have the potential to create qualified employment, in addition to the entrepreneurs included in the application; 
    • That they have the capacity to set up a company, when applicable, during the program; and 
    • Potential to achieve, within 5 years of the incubation contract, a turnover of more than €325,000/year, and/or a value of
    • assets of more than €325,000/year.
  • National Visas - Documents common to all types of visa

    • Visa application form completed and signed by the applicant;
    • Two identical photographs, in color and with a plain background, updated and in good condition to identify the applicant;
    • Passport or other recognized and valid travel document;
    • Criminal record certificate (for adults) from the country of the applicant's nationality or the country in which the applicant has resided for more than one year;
    • Request to consult the Portuguese Criminal Record;
    • Proof of means of subsistence;
    • Valid travel insurance to cover necessary medical expenses, including emergencies and possible repatriation.
