Cultural Diversity

Gastronomy

Health and Education

The health in Portugal is public and administered by the National Health Service (SNS). In addition, there are special social health insurance schemes for certain professions (subsistemas de saúde) and private health insurance. The SNS offers universal coverage, meaning that everyone living in Portugal is entitled to medical care.

 

The education system in Portugal is regulated by the state and the system system is the most widely used. There are also excellent international, bilingual and multilingual private schools in English, French, German, Mandarin and other languages.

The school year starts in September and runs until June/July of the following year, depending on the school or level of education. Education is compulsory for all pupils in the year they turn 6 years old and compulsory education ends when the pupil turns 18 (12th grade).
