  • What is the NIF?

    The NIF (Tax Identification Number) is your tax identification number in Portugal. The NIF is mandatory for residents and non-residents in Portugal and is required for a variety of daily activities, such as opening a bank account, obtaining a telephone/internet subscription, signing up for health insurance, doing any kind of real estate business or acquiring a residence permit. So if you're thinking of moving to Portugal, carrying out any kind of business activity or even simply staying here for extended periods, obtaining a NIF is a priority. The NIF is also known as the Taxpayer Number.

  • How long does it take to receive my NIF?

    Once the application has been submitted with all the necessary documents, the NIF will be obtained within 3 working days. Normally, you can expect to receive your NIF within 3 days, but this can extend to a week or longer if the Tax Office is experiencing delays.

  • Who will be my fiscal representative?

    We will put you in touch with a Portuguese lawyer who will be your fiscal (tax) representative and we will request a NIF in your name.

  • Does VP! offer ongoing tax representation?

    Yes, but our tax representation services are limited to acquiring your NIF and sending any messages from the tax office until you are assigned a new tax representative (you are charged 150€ per year to maintain tax representation). Find out more about fiscal representation.

  • What is included in my VP tax representation?

    VP! provides the tax representation service to obtain a NIF for a period of one (1) year or until the client has a tax domicile in Portugal, at which time they will be obliged to change their address on the Tax Authority's website, or until they have tax obligations in the country, under the terms of the General Tax Law, art. 19.

  • How can I get a TIN for my child?

    Simply fill in the order form with your child's details. If your child is under 18 years of age, there are some additional documents you will need to present. Both parents will also have to sign the Power of Attorney. Find out more.
