Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need my ancestor's birth certificate to become a Portuguese citizen?

    Yes. If you are the child of a Portuguese citizen, you will need your parent's certificate. 

    If you are a grandchild, you will need the grandparent's seat and the descendant of the grandparent.

  • Why do I need my Portuguese birth certificate to get my NIF?

    If you were born in Portugal or have Portuguese citizenship, you will need to provide a copy of your Portuguese birth certificate to obtain the NIF. Anyone with Portuguese nationality has a birth certificate/registration issued by Portugal. This applies even if you were born outside Portugal or have dual citizenship. Unfortunately, without this document, we won't be able to apply for your NIF from the tax office.

  • I was born outside Portugal and obtained my citizenship by descent, do I have a Portuguese birth certificate?

    If you have Portuguese citizenship, this means that you also have a birth certificate/registration issued in Portugal. If you were born outside Portugal, your birth data was entered into the Portuguese legal system when you were registered for nationality, thus creating a Portuguese birth certificate.

  • Do I need a birth certificate to find out if I'm entitled to nationality because I'm of Portuguese descent?

    Yes, you must provide proof of Portuguese ancestry through the birth certificate of the Portuguese ancestor.

  • How long does it take to receive a birth certificate?

    You can expect to receive your Portuguese birth certificate within 3 working days if the information you provide is in the Portuguese civil registry.
