It's a privilege that many take for granted. The truth is that the Portuguese rarely need visas to enter the countries they most want to visit. And there aren't that many nationalities in the world with this freedom, or power, as it's officially called.
The Henley Passport Index world ranking, which has been carried out since 2006, lists countries based on their citizens' freedom of movement, as expressed in their passports - or the number of destinations their holders can visit without a prior visa.
In the case of the Portuguese passport, it allows travel to 189 of a total of 227 countries without the need for a visa. This data places Portugal fifth on the official list, released on July 23, having moved up one position from the list released last year.
The first place in the ranking is occupied by Singapore, which allows its citizens to travel to 195 destinations. The country in Southeast Asia tops the table again after having been at the top in 2018, 2021 and 2022.
France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Spain follow in second place, with passports that allow travel to 192 destinations. In third place are South Korea, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Ireland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, which can travel to 191 destinations.
Just ahead of Portugal, which shares fifth place with Australia, are the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Norway, Belgium, Denmark and Switzerland. Citizens of these nations can travel to 190 different destinations with their passport.
Between 2008 and 2009, Portugal won the title of the world's second most valuable passport twice in a row. The following year, it dropped to eighth place, the worst ranking in the world for 18 years.
Despite this freedom, the Portuguese passport excludes travel to countries such as Russia, China, Cuba, India, North Korea or Pakistan. If you want to stop off at one of these destinations, you need to apply for an authorized visa in advance.
